Surrey brings home the County Cup

After 5 years of trying, a Surrey team of 12 has reclaimed the County Cup from Hampshire. The Ladies team of 5 also won the Women’s Long Range County Competition, making it a historic 2011 double.

Both teams shot at the Addiscombe RC range on 18th September and the County Cup result was announced just before the County dinner, meaning that guest of honour John Menard could present the trophy – properly named the NSRA County Challenge Bowl - to County Captain, Lina Jones.

The format for both competitions was a Dewar course of fire (20 shots each at 50 metres and 100 yards), with the County Cup team scoring 4685 from a possible 4800 (115 dropped points), beating Yorkshire (4665 / 135) and pushing Hampshire into third place with 4664 (136). The Women’s team scored 1953 (47 dropped points ex 2000), narrowly missing Devon’s year 2000 record of 1958 / 42 but beating Sussex by a clear margin (1930 / 70) and Devon into third (1926 / 74).

Simon Aldhouse topped the Surrey County Cup team table, scoring 396 from a possible 400, with the rest of the teams putting in a strong performance to bring home the trophies (team details below). The County Cup win was particularly gratifying, as Hampshire has held the cup since winning it off Surrey in 2006. According to the available records, Surrey has won the trophy more times than any other county.
