Chobham triumphs in Marsden trophy defence
Chobham and District Rifle Club narrowly defended the William Marsden Trophy on countback from Bedford Rifle Club at Worplesdon and District Target Shooting Club’s invitation match on 02 October 2011, while Bedford’s Wendy Foith won the Harry King individual Trophy, dropping only 5 points in the single Dewar 40 shot match and beating last year’s winner James O’Connell by a single point.
Unseasonably hot and sunny October weather greeted competitors from as far away as Birmingham at the popular club teams of 4 shoulder to shoulder. However, there was no time for lounging between details, due to the unusual format of the competition, in which 2 competitors from each team start at 50 yards and 100 yards simultaneously, swap distances after a detail without a break and then handover to their target changing team mates for the final two details, which are also run without a break.
The winning Chobham team consisted of Bill Brown (394), James O’Connell (394), Lina Jones (country member - 384) and Eric Carter (381); the tie with Bedford being broken on count back on each team’s 100 yard cards. Wendy Foith scored an impressive 198 on her 50 yard card and 197 at 100 yards. The top scorers from each team were also presented with a competition badge and the handicap competition was won by Croydon Rifle and Pistol Club.
The competition has been running since the late 1940s and was initiated when Worplesdon were in Division 1 of the National League and decided to invite the other teams in the Division to a friendly end of season shoot. The match was named after William Marsden and Harry King, who founded the Worplesdon club in 1906.
